Photographs based on Constructed Memories by Lana Špiler
PELEGRIN/The poetics of constructing memories (2019), a personal photography project by Lana Špiler.
Lana Špiler, a young Slovenian photographer just sent over her most recent personal photo project called “PELEGRIN/The poetics of constructing memories (2019)”.
The photo series is a study of the construction of memories as well as an investigation of the poetic potential of digital snapshots. The ambiguity of images and their meanings is exposed to subjective interpretations of the active viewer and at the same time serves as visual evidence of an authentic experience of its creator. In the words of John Berger: “Yet, unlike memory, photographs do not in themselves preserve meaning. They offer appearances – with all the credibility and gravity we normally lend to appearances – prised away from their meaning.”
The dreamy atmosphere of selected moments transforms images into unique experiences that are aware of their own inability to convey something of firm importance. The series was photographed on a summer weekend in the coastal settlement of Pelegrin on the Croatian Mediterranean coast and deals with the poetics of the evening light-dark light and the quiet summertime, which is also used to construct an even more personal visual mythology.
